The Loft - Watch Movie

The Loft is an American-Belgian thriller film that stars Karl Urban, James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, Eric Stonestreet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Rhona Mitra, Rachael Taylor and Isabel Lucas.The film surround with the five married guys who conspire to secretly share a penthouse loft in the city--a place where they can carry out hidden affairs and indulge in their deepest fantasies. But the fantasy becomes a nightmare when they discover the dead body of an unknown woman in the loft, and they realize one of the group must be involved. Paranoia seizes them as everyone begins to suspect one another. Friendships are tested, loyalties are questioned and marriages crumble as the group is consumed by fear, suspicion and murder in this relentless thriller. Here's a brief excerpt from Wikipedia about the plot of the film: Five married men share ownership of an upmarket loft, which they use to discreetly meet their respective mistresses. When the body of a murdered woman is found in that loft, the men begin to suspect each other of having committed the gruesome crime, as they are the only ones with keys to the premises. Through flashbacks, which are intertwined with scenes from the present, the story is unraveled. The five men are: Vincent Stephens: architect and designer of the building where the loft is situated; married with children; the one who initially suggests the 5 use the loft as a private oasis and is set up by the other men to be accused of the murder. Luke Seacord: married to Ellie who is insulin dependent; the one who discovered the body and initially calls Vincent and the others over to the loft. The police insinuate he is attracted to Vincent. He also recorded the men's activities in the loft without them knowing. Dr. Chris Vanowen: a married psychiatrist, half-brother to Phillip. Chris and Philip have a half-sister, Zoe. The most reluctant of the men to the idea and the last to accept a key to the loft, Chris eventually does so because he is attracted to Ann, who eventually becomes his mistress. She tells Chris not to fall in love with her because she is a prostitute. He gives her his key as proof he does not use the loft with other women. Marty Landry: married to Mimi; a heavy drinker and an obvious lech. He and Mimi become separated when a woman he fooled around with showed up at his home. Phillip Williams: half-brother to Chris as they have the same mother; married to Vicky who is the only daughter of a property developer, his boss; a drug user who grew up in an abusive household with his abusive father; very protective of his younger sister Zoe and warns the other men off having sex with her. I recently obtained a large stack of blu-rays for cheap and this movie was among them. I randomly chose this one to watch, as I’m a sucker for a good thriller. The film was well shot, the acting good. Lots of pretty people, and locations. Much of the dialogue was hormonal teenager and frat boy and surface level deep. The premise completely questionable, the plot rather ridiculous but believable given the set up, turned ridiculous as time went on - it still offered some twists and kept me guessing the whole time. In summary: this is five friends acting like self absorbed pigs and behaving badly and covering for each other. The whole thing is a train wreck of characters who were tempting disaster. A line that illustrates the biggest problems with this film comes from one of the leads to his brother, “we don’t treat women like that.” After their brother raped and beat a girl. Which is so profoundly twisted coming from someone who is cheating on their wife (they all are) and then cover for his brother's crimes. Somehow they write this in as if this line makes them on some higher moral ground. Despite all of this, somehow I still could watch it even if goes against my standards. Mostly because I just wanted to know what happened and wondered if there would be some redemption for any one of these characters. Nope, it’s a modern thriller, that with a little more effort could have reworked the script to have someone who may have better motives and character instead we get lazy writing with very very very questionable men who every woman in the film, simply made the “mistake of falling for the wrong guy” and the guys still end up getting away with their crimes and behaviors and the women are just props and objects. There is no depth to anyone in this film and that is too bad because the story actually had some potential to become something completely different.
